The new 2022 Dodge Charger is the latest vehicle to receive the lane departure warning with the lane keep assist feature. The system uses a camera and radar to detect when the vehicle has left its lane without using a turn signal. When it detects this, it will vibrate the steering wheel and sound an audible alert to remind the driver. If the driver continues to ignore these warnings, it will begin to apply gentle acceleration and deceleration forces on the steering wheel, which can be overridden by turning off the stability control system or pressing harder on the accelerator pedal.
The system is not designed to take over steering duties but rather only to warn drivers when they are leaving their lane unintentionally. The system is not meant as a substitute for safe driving practices such as keeping your eyes on the road at all times and being aware of your surroundings during the operation of your vehicle.
The system can also be used in conjunction with adaptive cruise control. As long as you maintain a safe following distance behind other vehicles, the system will automatically brake if you begin to move into another lane and then automatically steer you back into your lane when it senses an obstacle ahead.
